IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT!

December 27

Just out - the Apocalypse! At all the best Brazilian newsagents!

And now, I'm off to the beach :)

See you in 2007!

IN THE TIME OF THE PHARAOHS

December 15

A couple of articles about Egypt came my way, one about the new technologies used to find tombs, and another about a battle with the Hitites, during the reign of Ramses II. And before that I was doing a football guide for Angolan schools.

It reminds me of a few years back, I was doing maps for a travel magazine: just about every month the journalist would come back from some beautiful spot on the planet, and I'd have to produce the maps without ever leaving my room…

But it is also the time to be merry, so my best wishes to you all! And a very, very fantastic new year!

LINKS, LINKS AND MORE LINKS!

December 01

It's a month for updating the links page, so plenty of interesting stuff there, and also worth a visit are The Center For Cartoon Studies and The Norman Rockwell Museum

EXTRA PAGE

November 09

This week I did a page for Steven Grant's online column Permanent Damage, in a comparative study on how artists resolve a comic script.

ARMIES VS PEOPLE

November 01

I've been doing some illustrations lately, a few being for an article about modern-day mercenaries in Iraq, with colours by Weberson Santiago. Just by chance, my next assignment was about Rogers' Rangers, one of the first groups of American colonial militia - in the 18th Century (again with Weberson giving me a hand with the colouring).

And the teaching experiment at Quanta was mind-blowing: to have all those artists in one place, even if only for a couple of hours, drawing, painting, sketching, inking and/or colouring. Check out some photos here. For my part, I produced a Robin Hood & Lady Marion sketch.

CLASSES OF 2006

October 16

September was a month with more drawing classes than normal: here are some photos (and even some caricatures) of the kids from all the classes I taught.

This Friday I'll take part in an interesting teaching experiment at Quanta, where 17 artists and illustrators will work for a couple of hours as students will be able to observe, live, the creative process (or block, if we're having a bad day...) and ask as many questions as they want.

KAOS!

September 14

Kaos! was a comic I put together with three friends in 2004 and 2005 for the Brazilian market. It was a three-issue anthology of Vertigo-style stories, exclusive interviews with Alan Moore, David Llyod and Dave Gibbons, and special pin-ups or stories by fan-favorites Roger Cruz, Greg Tocchini and Marcelo Campos. It was a great experience and I learned a lot from it.

I've now put the Kaos! website back online, so you can check out the artwork and some exclusive web content, such as interviews with Alex de Campi, Al Davison, John Higgins and Tony Lee (under Entrevistas).

Plus - some sketches for Robin Hood characters.

STEP-BY-STEP

August 27

The style I've been working with lately for Robin Hood (and also the Brothers - Fall Of Lucifer covers) is completely digital, no pencils or paper involved. I've done are a couple of short step-by-step tutorials.

September will be an almost full-time teaching month for me, as I'll be giving drawing classes at three libraries here in São Paulo, and just started a new group at Quanta Art School.

And I've done a page for Rich Johnston's Civil Wardrobe, of an Asian hero called the Black Panda.

GOOD OLD ROBIN HOOD

August 03

I'm working with Tony Lee and Artur Fujita again - this time on a folk legend that is close to home: Robin Hood. Apart from the interview with Tony at Newsarama, you can read a bit more about this project in Regie Rigby's column at SilverBulletComicbooks, here and here. And I've put together a 6-page preview with the cover.

In Brazil a recent Graphic Novel to hit the newsstands is Gringo, by Wilson Vieira and Aloisio de Castro. It features pin-ups of the lead character by Julia Bax, Sandro Castelli, Anderson Cabral, Mantovani, Caio Majado and yours truly.

NEW PROJECT

July 14

Tony Lee has done an interview at Newsarama with the details of our new project together, a new version of an old classic. Check it out!

NEWS FROM BRAZIL

July 11

Apart from comics artwork, I also do magazine illustrations. An article I did the art for - "What Super-Powers Can Science Give Us?"- won the Premio Abril, a prize given by the biggest publisher in Brazil, in the category Best Scientific Article. Here is the illustration for that article and a couple of others.

My report on Bristol Expo 2006 will appear in this month's Brazilian edition of Wizard magazine - issue #34, on newsstands next week.

Also, today is the national Comic Awards party and Julia Bax has won the Best New Talent award for her work in Kaos!, a comic I created and edited with three friends in 2004 and 2005. Check out her website to see the stunning art she is now producing for Boom! Studios.

BROTHERS UPDATE

June 19

A couple of pages from the second issue of Brothers, The Fall Of Lucifer; a couple of uncoloured pages from the third issue; and the cover of the fifth issue.

BACK AT THE DRAWING BOARD

June 05

Bristol Expo was great. The Pulse has reports by Tony Lee, David Hine and Alice Doyle, and here is a hilarious report from the guys that do Tozzer.

This week it's a war-themed update, with a few pages from a personal project with Marcela Godoy about the Jewish Golem myth, set during WWII, and four magazine illustrations.

JUST 1 PAGE AGAIN

May 12

Bristol is this weekend and with it there will be another Just1Page, put together by Adrian Brown. This year's theme is football, and sports a great cover by my good friend Cabral.

Check out the illustration I did for this issue in Sketches, and a few new pages from the yet-unreleased Brothers #3 in the Gallery.

WELCOME TO THE NEW SITE

May 01

At last, the new site is up! Mucho thanks to Sergio Codespoti! A version in Portuguese will be coming sometime soon, and some areas have few (or no) links yet, but I hope to keep the updates regular so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Have a look around and if you have any trouble, questions or suggestions, check the contact info.

All the best!
Sam

BRISTOL AND BROTHERS

May 01

Brothers: The Fall Of Lucifer was released a couple of weeks ago, and I expect the second issue will be released by May 13th, in time for the Bristol Expo (the UK’s biggest comic convention) which I shall be attending again this year.

Markosia will have a big booth and I hope to be signing Brothers and Starship Troopers at some time.

NEW TEACHER AT QUANTA

May 01

As of last week I have started teaching drawing classes once a week at Quanta School Of Art. I must be doing something right, since it’s partially own by Marcelo Campos and has such teachers as Roger Cruz, Ivan Reis, Octavio Cariello and Greg Tocchini.

Check out their website to see loads of pretty pictures...

TROOPERS SELL OUT AND INVADE TOP 300

May 01

Markosia has announced that Starship Troopers #1, shipping in March 2006, has become the biggest selling UK comic distributed via DCD. The first issue is written by Tony Lee and features digitally painted artwork by Sam Hart and Rod Reis with colours by Kieran Oats.

Markosia launched the first issue at the NYC Comicon February 2006, and as it has already sold-out will be releasing a Director’s Cut edition, available here.
