AND ONE MORE THING
December 29
Batman!
IT'S THE END MY FRIEND
December 09
Over the last month - as well as paid work and sketches for my next project -
I did some pages and illustrations for various fanzines
and websites.
I wish you all a great New Year!
FANZINES IN SAO PAULO
November 21
126,500 streets, 6 million cars, 17,000 buses, 11 million people in 1,523 square kilometres.
São Paulo is truly gigantic. It's the world's fifth largest city and shows no sign of slowing down.
Apart from the 3 drawing and comic classes that I teach at
Quanta every week, I also teach drawing
and fanzine classes for the City of São Paulo, normally two three-month courses a year on the
outskirts of town. The classes happen at city libraries and are free, mostly for underprivileged kids who
love comics and drawing.
In the 4 years I've been a part of this project it's been very satisfying to meet children and other educators
that I wouldn't have otherwise, and it reminds me how incredible it is that the worlds comics create often
travel across cities, countries, cultures - taking years, decades to reach the readers - and can
inspire anyone who cares to enter.
Here are a few photos of this year's wrap-up event
at the end of October. Here's the project's
blog, with other pics and pages from the students.
Other teachers involved are Edson Pelicer, Rodrigo Bueno,
Jozz,
Weberson Santiago,
Alexandre Nagado,
Edu Mendes,
Ezê and Fábio Santos,
organized by Doroty Rojas.
GO WEST
November 01
Thanks to José Aguiar
who invited me to participate in a 60-year anniversary homage
to one of Italy's iconic wild west characters, Tex.
And a real-life drama in last week's storyboard for Veja.
SMALL MATTERS
October 17
The third and last part of Judge Dredd is out, couple more pages in the
gallery,
and matter meets anti-matter from last week's Folha de São Paulo.
ONE MAN AGAINST THE WORLD
October 01
You know how sometimes it feels like everybody and everything is working against you?
Imagine how it must have felt for Robin Hood…
The whole 142 pages plus cover are all done,
coloured and lettered and sent to the editor. Due Spring 2009.
And the second part of Judge Dredd is in this week's 2000AD, prog 1605.
JUDGE DREDD!!!
September 22
So, one of the things I hinted at all the way back in May, is that I have
drawn a 3-part Judge Dredd story for the cosmic comic
2000AD,
written by Robbie Morrison with colours by Len O' Grady and a classy cover by Cliff Robinson
- out now in the galaxies' best newsagents!
3 DIGITS
August 07
Robin Hood page 100, and some new
sketches.
OPERATION SOUTH AMERICA
July 08
A storyboard for this week's Veja, about the safe rescue
of Ingrid Bitancourt and 14 other captives in Colombia.
And in Rio de Janeiro, some of my pages will be featured in the exhibition
Ilustrando em Revista,
from July 10 until August 31, in a special section for Comic Art - alongside Gabriel Ba',
Fabio Moon, Bruno D'Angelo, Laerte and others.
COMIC ART NOW
June 02
Showcase book COMIC ART NOW is out,
with some stunning artwork from new and established artists, edited by Dez Skinn,
foreword by Mark Millar, lovely cover by Rian Hughes, in all the best comic and book stores.
Shem Ha-Mephorash is running for
Best Independent Special Issue 2007 for the Brazilian HQMix Awards.
And the writer Marcela Godoy and I will be giving a one-day workshop in July on
Creating Monsters and Villains, at
Quanta Art Academy.
NYCC 08
May 15
Back from NYCC - a great show - new computer breaks down, site server changes platforms and loses all my e-mail
(if anyone wrote in the last couple of weeks, please resend ) but 2008 still looking good, due basically to
two things I can't mention just yet.
Anyways, plenty of photos…
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
April 13
Spent the last 2 weeks of March in England, had meetings with Walker Books,
Tony Lee and a fantastic Easter in Cornwall with the family.
At the end of this week I'll be at the NYCC, and you can me find at 3 booths:
probably most mornings I'll be at Arts & Comics (booth # 2716) with other Brazilian
artists such as Greg Tocchini, Renato Guedes and Rod Reis;
Heavyproton - publishers of
Obsession and Raw Play -
from 3 to 4 pm every day (booth # 2255);
and at some time I'll be signing Starship Troopers at the
Markosia booth (# 1756).
Also, a new drawing class and a change in the timetable at
Quanta.
PLAYING CATCH-UP
March 11
11 years ago I worked as colour assistant for John Higgins
at his Luton based studio. It was a great time and learning experience. After returning to Brasil I worked with
Rod Reis
doing the colours for the second issue of John's Razorjack series,
and then we did the digitally painted artwork for Markosia's Starship Troopers.
John has recently done a Jonah Hex issue, art and colours, that looks great,
and Rod is doing colours for Superman, Green Lantern,
JSA covers and anything else he can put his hands on.
I have hit the half-way mark for Robin Hood: Outlaw's Pride, that now has a
release date for Spring 2009, and Artur Fujita
is close on my heels with the colours. Updated the gallery with the cover to Bill Rees'
new GN: Obsession, and a storyboard
for Folha de São Paulo, plus some magazine covers from years gone by.
I probably won't be attending Bristol this year,
as I plan to be at the NYCC in April.
BITS AND BOBS
January 24 2008
2008 started well - Apart from other things, I'm now almost half-way through Robin Hood
(some favorite scenes here) and did a few more storyboards
for Folha de São Paulo.
But I had some problems with the site e-mail this month, so if anybody wrote to me, please resend…
